You will need rBTC to be able to pay the Gas, which is the fee for using the RSK Blockchain. You can pay the platform fees in rBTC too
rBTC Smart Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency issued by RSK. It is pegged 1:1 with BTC. rBTC is necessary since with BTC you can't run Smart Contracts, which makes it possible for DeFi to exist.
Here you can find ways to get rBTC and go back to BTC. This is another resource from the Rootstock website.
The Boltz exchange allows you to make swaps from rBTC to Lightning Network, Bitcoin on chain, and Liquid. You can also go from Rootstock to the other networks.

Peg-in is the standard term for the process that transfers Bitcoins from the Bitcoin network to the RSK network.
A peg-in:
Converts BTC to RBTC
Locks BTC on the Bitcoin network
Releases RBTC on the RSK network
A two-way peg protocol allows transfers of a cryptocurrency from a main blockchain to a secondary blockchain and vice versa. It requires low third-party trust.
In the case of Rootstock, the main blockchain is Bitcoin, and the secondary blockchain is Rootstock. Every RBTC (or fraction of RBTC) unlocked in the Rootstock blockchain requires BTC to be locked on the Bitcoin blockchain. This mechanism ensures there is a one-to-one relationship between BTC and RBTC (1 BTC = 1 RBTC), which is guaranteed by the protocol.
Powpeg uses the security features of a Hardware Security Module alongside Rootstock’s consensus layer, based on Bitcoin merged mining.
In the following 2-way-peg-app page, you will see how to get rBTC with the 2 Way Peg.
